CHAPTER 13

Yee let out a long breath as she moved her arms in front of her body, using the motion to help focus the spirit energy inside her body into a single point. From here she could then move it around, bringing it to other part of her body or to her fingertips so she could impart it to others. Her natural ability with the energy was rather poor and she had very little skill in its use, unlike others in the Quess family like her middle sister who was gifted beyond belief, but the act of manipulating the energy helped calm Yee’s mind.

“You are up early,” her older sister said from the doorway that lead out to the small porch that ran behind their rooms.

“I was planning on doing some training before the assembly starts this morning,” Yee explained, releasing her hold on the energy and letting it disperse through her body. “I can feel my muscles weakening after so long of inactivity.” Yee turned around to face her sister, already fully dressed in the black gown of their family, the morning sun glinting off the sheen of the silk.

“I see.” Noni let out a soft hum as she looked passed Yee at the scenery behind her. “Just be careful, something happened yesterday and it has the Palace on edge.”

“Oh?” Yee raised an eyebrow, trying to guess what that thing might be. Surely none of the people she had been meeting with late at night had been caught, if they had then the Palace Guard would have already burst in here and arrested Yee. “Any ideas?”

“I do not make speculations,” Noni stated. “But judging from the lack of any kind of military response, I am sure in my thinking that it was not an attack or altercation of some kind. But given that it was a day of rest yesterday then there should not have been any official meetings going on, so I find it hard to believe that this is political in nature either.”

“Just because there was not supposed to be any meetings going on yesterday does not mean that there was not any,” Yee reminded. She slipped on the sandals that she had taken off so she could better feel the ground between her feet as she did her exercises and looked back up at her sister. “I will be careful and keep my eyes and ears open.”

“And your mouth closed if you can help it,” Noni gave a teasing smile. One that Yee gave right back.

“I should be back in plenty of time before the morning assembly, please do not leave here without me,” Yee said as she passed by her sister and headed for the door. As her sister's body guard it was imperative that she stick with her at all times. They had not brought guards like many of the other nobles had, leaving it up to Yee to protect her sister. Really she should not even be leaving her alone now but they had both agreed that Noni was just as capable of taking care of herself as Yee was.
